Hair transplantation

The information below is only an outline of the treatment. The purpose of the brochure is to address the problem generally, facilitating the understanding of the treatment by the patient and his becoming aware of any questions and doubts which need to be explained by the doctor.

Surgical hair transplantation is a method which gives tremendous and permanent results, if done by an experienced surgeon. The guarantee that a given surgeon has the necessary knowledge and experience is his/her professional qualification as a specialist. The Melilot clinic employs only specialists in plastic surgery who deal every day with aesthetic surgery and hair transplantation.

Operation Hair transplantation does not cure the baldness. Masculine baldness is a genetically determined physiological process. Transplants give hair only in places where it is currently lacking. The operation does not remove the causes, but improves only the results of baldness. Only the patient's hair is transplanted. Its quantity does not increase. It consists of the "transfer" of hair from the back of the head to the front. Hair does not grow, but if it is properly placed, bald patches can be hidden.

Hair in the occiput area (at the back of the head) is permanent and rarely falls out. After transplantation it is still permanent. Sometimes after an operation it starts growing as before the transplantation. Satisfactory thickness requires 3 to 4 operations. There is less and less hair on the back but this is almost unnoticable. After the removal, the earlier location of the hair is sewn. As a result the area at the back of the head is slightly lifted and the hairy skin becomes spread. Even after four transplants, the difference is not visible.

The strap of skin to which the hair is to be added is prepared by separating individual hair follicles. Transplants are put in small cuts and are not fixed in any manner. After a while, they are strong enough not to fall out. As permanent healing takes place after a few days, prudence is highly recommended within the first period after an operation.

Healing After the operation a dressing is put on. This dressing protects the area which is still anaesthetised against accidental injuries. As it is taken off in surgery the next day, it does not attract the attention of patients' friends. Only blood clots stuck to transplants may draw some attention. Some of them can remain for up to 3 weeks. Most of them come off after 10 - 14 days.

Further treatment After 2 to 3 months all transplanted hair comes off although in the initial period after an operation it happens to grow. In its place grows natural hair which retains the permanency of the area from which it was taken. Some of it is visible after 3 months, however, the final result of the operation can be seen after half a year. This is the right moment to make plans for further treatment.
