Breast reduction
Apart from the aesthetic point of view, outgrown and sagging breasts are behind a number of ailments. Their weight makes moving and exercising impossible. This can even sometimes be the cause for a curvature of the spine. Shoulder straps of the bra sometimes leave permanent traces on the shoulders, and the skin under the breasts becomes macerated and can be easily infected. This surgery can be performed at any age. Sometimes it is conducted even with 15-year old girls, although surgeons recommend waiting until they grow up. The risk of having difficulties in future breast-feeding related to it, is also a good reason to postpone it. The method applied in Melilot, referred to as the vertical mammoplasty, is the most modern and one of the safest of plastic surgery procedures. However, it can cause some complications. The most important ones are listed in the brochure. All doubts arisen after reading it should be discussed with your surgeon. Other methods of treatment Small reductions can be made by liposuction. This also involves surgery, but its aesthetic results are sometimes better. Liposuction is efficient only in the case of non-falling breasts in which fatty tissue accumulates next to glands in separate places. In some cases, if a bust consists mostly or only of glands, liposuction does not bring satisfactory results. As this can be ascertained only during an operation, it happens that some patients decide to continue the treatment by a method of vertical mammoplasty. To avoid the risk of repeating the operations, you should discuss possibilities for your treatment with a given surgeon. Anaesthesia Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthetic. A patient wakes up after an operation with the dressing on her chest. All details concerning the anaesthesia are discussed at the appointment with an anaesthetist. Operation An operation commences usually from reducing of the diameter of the areola. Separate from the cut around the areola, a surgeon cuts skin vertically from the areola down to the breast. In Melilot we operate using a modern method of vertical mammoplasty. It allows to avoid an additional horizontal cut under the breast to that used in traditional methods. This technique is based on a completely new philosophy. The reduced and lifted breast is placed in a new position to the side of the chest. In older methods the breast is kept in a new position only by tensed skin. Effects of these methods are less permanent and the scars are more visible due to stretches. After removing the excess of tissue from both breasts, a surgeon stitches the skin. As the excess of skin is not removed, there are no additional scars. A stitch wrinkles the skin in many small folds spread along the line of the cut. After several weeks these wrinkles will disappear. The shape of the breasts, which in the first few weeks is not very encouraging, changes within 8 weeks as the breasts lower and settle in their new position. Healing Before sewing the skin, the surgeon inserts drains in the cuts to pipe off blood remains from the breasts area. When one changes a dressing on the next day, these drains are removed. At the same time a patient gets a special bra which will support inserts in a proper position by the time of complete healing of injuries. The bra is worn for 2 months (also at night). The stitches are removed after a week. The bra is still worn, but there is no need to change dressings. Swelling disappears rather slowly. Between the second and the third week patients feel enough well to return to their previous lifestyle. After the fourth week the swelling disappears completely and breasts stop feeling sensitive. The results of breast reduction satisfy most patients for many years. One should remember about the passage of time. It is natural that with time breasts grow flabby and lower. Sometimes it is so visible that after a few years some patients decide to re-correct it.
